Suzanne Hurley and I began this project over 2 years ago. We met when she was promoting her fantastic book, Great Houses of Brunswick. We knew we wanted to work together after she saw what I was doing with the Golden Isles History Facebook page.
Brunswick’s original blueprint was solidified in a plan laid out by General James Oglethorpe in 1771. Abandoned after the Civil War, Brunswick became a thriving Gilded Age center for industry and shipping, as well as a stop-off for the wealthiest northern industrialists escaping to the Golden Isles. Some of her early architectural jewels were lost to progress or neglect, but modern Brunswickians value their past. Today’s vibrant Old Town Historic District still boasts eye-catching examples of days gone by.
We dedicate Brunswick Past & Present to Charles Spottiswood Tait, Sr., who is our inspiration for this project and the reason it exists. Thank you for your timeless images and for preserving them so that we can still enjoy them over 100 years later. Suzanne and I are so excited to share our Brunswick, both Charles’s past and our present, with you in this book.
